Evolution of Classification Standards
Throughout the short history of Para Kickboxing, classification standards have evolved to ensure fair competition and provide opportunities for athletes of all abilities. The classification system was designed by Jesus Eguia and his team from The WAKO Kickboxing Federation of Spain to group athletes based on their level of impairment, allowing for more equal and competitive matches. Over time, advancements in technology and a better understanding of disabilities will guide us to continued improvements in the classification process.
One of the key aspects of the evolution of classification standards is the move towards a more evidence-based approach. In the past, classification may have relied more on subjective assessments, but now there is a greater emphasis on using objective criteria to determine an athlete's classification. This shift has helped to create more transparency and consistency in the classification process, ultimately benefiting all athletes involved.
As Para Kickboxing continues to grow in popularity, it is crucial that classification standards continue to evolve to meet the needs of athletes and ensure the integrity of the sport. By staying up-to-date with the latest research and technology, the classification system can continue to provide a level playing field for athletes of all abilities. Collaboration with other international parasport organizations & federations leading via education is how Para Kickboxing will grow and prosper.
